Delete VIPRE patchmanagement contents

Had a customer whos machine was running slow. We ran WinDirStat to see what was eating up the space on the machine. The pagesys file was huge, but a large chunk was under VIPRE. Specifically with the PatchManagement Patches.

According to VIPRE is it okay to delete out the contents of this folder. We found this information here.

Deleting the files went fine. We left the small .pup files since they were small.

Right Click On Desktop Slow

We got a call for a slow machine. Specifically when they would right-click on the desktop to create a new folder it took a couple of minutes before the panel would show up.

After doing some clean up and installing some Windows updates we decided to also try a registry fix we stumbled upon.

When we got to the ContextMenuHandlers we removed the one entry for “Desktop”, and right-a-way the right-click on the desktop was working the way it should.

Windows Auto Scrolling Can’t Select Printer Acrobat

We had a call where the user wasn’t able to select the default printer while in Acrobat reader DC. It did work in every other program. He was working from home and connected to his work network via VPN. When he opened Acrobat and tried to select the local printer the printer selection would automatically go back to the network printer. I disconnected the VPN and removed the network printer knowing when he connected the network again he would get it back.

Now when we tried to select the network printer in Acrobat it would jump up to the first choice of “Fax”. Different but not better. Another tech noticed it happened when ever we tried to use the Windows scroller on the side of a window it was autoscrolling.

We thought it might be the touch pad or something else wrong with Windows so we patched the Dell with new chipset, BIOS, touchpad driver, and nothing worked.

The problem was solved when we noticed there were two mice in the device manager. One was a generic “HID mouse” we removed this and everything was working.

Outlook Keeps Asking For My Credentials

We were having this issue with one of our employees. He would login using his network password. He could access our Outlook Web App (OWA) which requires his same network password; however, when we entered that password into his Outlook we would get “Wrong username or password“.

The solution came with the “Credential Manager“.  There was a long “MicrosoftOffice15_Data:orgid:….“.  I click on this to expand and hit “Remove from vault“, and this fixed the issue.

Although this worked for several customers we had one that required us to create a new profile in the Mail portion of the Control Panel.

Change Font Size On Desktop Icons

We had a customer call for this and it took a second to find the right answer. Be prepared to have to restart when you are finished changing the settings.

  • Right-click on the desktop and choose “Personalize“.
  • In the lower left you will see “Display“
  • Here you can change your display from Smaller, Medium, and Larger.
  • Restart and you should be set

Microsoft – This website has been reported as unsafe

While working on a DIVI WordPress site I wanted to check to see how the site looked in Internet Explorer. I know the client uses this browser primarily. Everything was fine in Firefox and Chrome, but in IE I get the following screen.

I choose “Report that this site does not contain threats” option since I knew the site was up-to-date and safe.

On the next screen I got the following page.

It appears the site is possibly being blocked because of the weather plug-in I am using.

I completed this form and submitted it. I got the following message.

Basically telling me Microsoft will consider my recommendation, but it is up to them to determine if the site is safe or not. This doesn’t re-assure me that my client will be able to view the site in Internet Explorer.

I sent the link to a co-worker and they had no issue. A search on the web lead me to this page.

They talk about malware possibly being installed. I searched my IE extensions and went into the Control Panel to see if any Possibly-Unwanted-Programs (PUPs) were installed; however, I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

I ended up resetting my Internet Explorer by going to Tools >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Reset. After this the warning didn’t come back. My IE must have gotten a little hi-jacked.

Critical Error Event ID: 41 – The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first

We have seen this several times and different users out there have their fix for it. At first I would be looking at the power supply as the suspect, but others are pointing to the “Power Options”.

I got a call for this error today and changed the power options to “never” turn of display or computer. I also went into the the advanced options and manually typed in “never” for turning off the “hard disk”.

UPDATE:
(8/21/2020):
I had this happen again to another machine to which may have been ready to go into a sleep mode; however, when the BSOD showed up there was “video TDR failure” mentioned. In following this error message I came across the following article which actually may be a better solution to this issue.

Fix operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709) Printer Error

I got this error working on clients machine. The fix was pretty easy. I used a YouTube video to get started. It took me to the Registry and had me change the permissions on a folder to “full control”, and this fixed the issue.

The issue was I was unable to remove or set a printer to be the default. The video was a good start. Made the registry change and rebooted and everything was working great. I saw the next YouTube video for the same issue; however, after this guy set the permissions to “full control” and fixed the printer issue he set the permissions back on the folder to where they were before. I am thinking this is a better way to do it.

Enable What You Hear Driver Windows 7 To Record Sound

I wanted to record a sound using my work computer which is a Dell Precision T3500 refurbished machine. I knew I was going to need to enable the “stereo mix” driver to do this. Often this driver is disabled and you have to go into the Sound >> Recording, right-click in the blank area and check “show disabled devices” and it shows up. Mine did not.

I solved this issue by going to Dell, putting in my service tag number, and downloaded the basic driver. The driver turned out to be the SoundMax driver. That solved the whole issue.
